Review: 'A Wrinkle in Time' soundtrack is full of awe-inspiring songs and scores
The album for the newly-released film “A Wrinkle in Time” presents a selection of songs filled with a childlike wonder along with a heated intensity, representing the film’s nature of awe and terror. While the songs by well-known artists such as Demi Lovato and Sia may be getting the most attention, it is the instrumental songs not performed by well-known artists that reveal the true depths on the film.
All the instrumental songs and scores were composed by Ramin Djawadi. Even if a listener hasn’t seen the movie yet, they can vaguely guess what some of the scenes are like based on the music for each scene. These songs convey the similar kind of emotions and sense of journey as scores in similar movies like “The Hunger Games,” but in a way that highlights the sci-fi aspect.
One song that stands out is “Camazotz.” The song starts out with a sense of rising tension, making it feel like something could jump out at you in any moment. Then all of a sudden, the beat of the fast-paced drum begins. You can practically feel yourself running for your life. As this beat goes on, Djawadi makes sure to keep it interesting by adding in violin, which grows more and more into a techno sound that feels like a scream. The screaming of the high-pitched violin then begins to echo itself into a sort of screeching sound.
On a bit of a brighter note, the closing song “The Universe Is Within All of Us” definitely gives off that cheesy “all is at peace” vibe, but in such a way that the intensity is still very present. There is a sense of mission in the song but also a sense of closure that the main characters can complete their quest with confidence and hope. In a way, it almost sounds like a song played at a graduation or an award ceremony, in that it is celebrating the accomplishments made but also opening a door for all the things that are to come. The end is the highlight of the song, with the joyful rejoicing represented by the orchestra consistently building up and then closing off with a sound of victory in the crisp finish.
While these compositions are what carry the soundtrack, there is no denying that “Flower of the Universe” by Sade and No I.D. gives off the same mysterious sci-fi experimental feel of the film. Initially on hearing the title of the song, it’s easy to assume that this will be some kind of upbeat song. TOn the contrary, it is more of a calm but introspective song. The bridge includes a wide variety of sounds such as single guitar strums and the drawn-out techno sounds. It feels as if you are entering an unknown world in which you were openly invited to, but definitely not prepared for. With vague lyrics like “They hear you when you cry, this love is far and wide,” the song presents lyrics that seem encouraging on paper, but come off as luring and somewhat deceptive with the background music. This is singer Sade’s first released song in seven years, and it’s one of the most distinctive tracks on the album.
Again, although the instrumentals are what steal the show, other songs like “Let Me Live” connect with listeners on a different level. Even though listeners probably aren’t dealing with issues like the ones the characters in the movie, they can still relate to lyrics like “Wish I could be a little bit braver, a little more sooner, a little more cooler.” These songs maybe don’t paint a picture of what each scene looks like, but rather give a picture to the story as a whole and the themes that audience members can take away from the film.
Overall, the “Wrinkle In Time” album portrays the nature of the film by using songs that have the classic feel of adventure, but also an individuality.
