About the SCP Foundation
The original SCP: Containment Breach was released for free on April 15, 2012. It was developed and published independently by Finnish developer Jonas Rikkonen. The game’s premise is based on the collaborative online work about a fictional organization called the SCP Foundation. SCP stands for Secure, Contain, and Protect. Its mission is to study and contain various creatures that might pose a threat to humanity.
In the original SCP: Containment Breach, you play as a Class-D test subject. During a containment breach in the facility, you must survive while the dangerous SCPs are roaming around and threatening your life. Its gameplay is pretty simple. All you have are two bars at the bottom of the screen that shows your eye blink meter and your stamina. You must interact with your surroundings while trying to find the exits.
What’s New in the Unity Remake
The most obvious upgrade in the SCP: Containment Breach - Unity remake is in its graphics. While the original still featured uncanny blocky 3D graphics, the Unity remake has much more realistic designs and proportions. There are also brand new SCPs included in the Unity remake, making it much more dangerous and difficult than before. In terms of gameplay, there is really only one new mechanic and that’s the addition of a health bar. Most of the SCPs in the will one-hit-kill you, but the new SCPs and locations have more gradual effects on the character.
The scope of the game is also much larger than the original game. The crazy, labyrinthine hallways of the SCP Foundation are still present in the Unity remake, but they are far more numerous and confusing than before.
Compared to Other Horror Games
Within the survival horror genre, SCP: Containment Breach doesn’t really offer anything special. If you’ve played other horror games before, you’ve likely seen all of the tricks it has up its sleeve including jump scares, scary static, confusing hallways, and more. The most enjoyable thing about this game is trying to survive against the SCPs with their wide variety of powers and abilities.
An Amazing Remake of a Great Game
Despite the simplicity of its premise and gameplay, the original SCP: Containment Breach was a massive success thanks to its ambitiousness and creativity. The SCP: Containment Breach - Unity remake takes everything that was amazing about the original game and gives it a much-needed makeover in terms of graphics and atmosphere. Fans of the original game and the SCP body of works, in general, will definitely enjoy this remake.
