How to Fix an iPad that Does Not Connect to a PC
For a small business owner, an iPad is an invaluable device. Acting as a portable computer, the iPad allows you to email employees and clients, surf the Internet, access an address book and download applications that help with day-to-day business activities. To update an iPad, most users connect the device to their PCs; if you encounter an issue in which your PC does not recognize your iPad and your iPad runs an iOS version that cannot be updated over the Internet, it is impossible to update your device. A few troubleshooting techniques can solve this problem and allow you to connect your iPad to your PC.

Check your USB cable for faults. If your USB cable is frayed or torn, it will not function properly. Replace it with a new USB cable. Also, check for dirt or debris on the connectors and verify that both ends of the cable make a secure connection to the PC and the iPad.

Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support installed to your PC. Apple Mobile Device Support is an automatic installation alongside iTunes. Open the "Start" menu and click "Control Panel" followed by "Uninstall a Program" to show a list of all software installed on your PC. If Apple Mobile Device Support is not present in the list, reinstall your copy of iTunes.

Restart the Apple Mobile Device Support program. Open the "Start" menu and click "Programs," followed by "Services." Click "Apple Mobile Device" and "Stop the Service" on the left side of the screen. Click "Start the Service" to restart the Apple Mobile Device Support.

Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver installed correctly. Open the "Start" menu. Right-click "Computer" and select "Properties" from the drop-down menu. Click "Device Manager" in the upper left corner followed by "Universal Serial Bus Controllers." If the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is not listed, reinstall it through Windows.

Turn off any security programs, such as your anti-virus software or firewall, before connecting the iPad to your PC. These programs may detect the iPad connection as harmful and block it.

Uninstall all third-party mobile phone software using the "Uninstall a Program" application in the "Control Panel." Third-party mobile phone software may conflict with your iPad, causing it not to connect properly to your PC.
