the importance of the church and the protestant moral
education in those times. Girls were supposed to behave
“like a proper young lady”. Women spent time knitting
and doing household chores. The conversation between
Mrs.Rachel Lynde and Marilla shows the aversion to
foreigners and Catholics in their society during that time.

Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery in 1908. It recounts the adventures of
Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to Matthew and
Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who had intended to adopt a
boy to help them on their farm in Price Edward Island. The novel recounts how
Anne makes her way with the Cuthberts, in school, and within the town.L M
MONTGOMERYLucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942), was a Canadian author best
known for a series of novels beginning in 1908 with AnneofGreenGables.
The book was an immediate success and the central character, Anne, an orphaned
girl, made Mongomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international
following. The first novel was followed by a series of sequels with Anne as the
central character.
