3ds Max

Solution:

To resolve issues with 3ds Max attempting to open in another software package, not finding the appropriate executable, or missing the 3ds Max icon, try the following solutions.

Method 1: Rename the EXE file

In some instances, renaming the EXE file can restore the icon.
  1. Rename 3dsmax.exe file to "3dsmax".
  2. Accept any warnings regarding the format change.
  3. Rename the same file back to 3dsmax.exe.

Method 2: Associate the EXE in Windows Program Associations

To ensure 3ds Max is associated to the correct EXE file, and correct version of 3ds Max, do the following:
  1. Right-click on a MAX file that has no icon associated with it.
  2. Choose "Open with".
  3. Select "Choose another app".
  4. Click the the "More Apps" option.
  5. Scroll down and select the "Look for another app on this PC".
  6. When the browser window opens, navigate to the proper 3ds Max executable file (3dsmax.exe) and apply the path.
For example, by default the 3dsmax.exe file is located in: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max <version>
  1. After the proper EXE file has been selected, check the box "Always use this app to open .max files".
  1. The icons should update to the normal 3ds Max icon.

Method 3: Associate the 3ds Max files to the proper EXE via the 3ds Max Properties window

Another option to restore missing icons to 3ds Max files is by associating the files with the proper 3dsmax.exe file via the 3ds Max Properties. To use this method, apply the following procedure in Windows:

  1. Right-click on a 3ds Max file (*.max).
  2. Choose Properties.
  3. In the Properties window, navigate to the "Opens with" section.
  4. Click Change. Windows will then prompt you to choose another application to open the *.max file(s) with. Generally, the most recent 3ds Max version path will be available to choose in the "Other options" section.
  5. Choose the 3ds Max <version> from this section, as it should have an icon associated with it.
Note: If the 3ds Max application does not appear in the list, use steps 4-6 in Method 2 to find it.

Method 4: Windows Registry Edit

Should the issue persist, a Windows Registry edit can be made.

Warning!
Problems caused by improperly editing the Windows registry could render your computer operating system unusable. Microsoft provides a wealth of critical information that you need to know about the registry in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Use the Microsoft Registry Editor only at your own risk and only after backing up the registry as outlined for your operating system in the Microsoft article How to back up and restore the registry in Windows and in the related solution How to back up the system registry. Additional information about the registry is also contained in the Help topics in the Microsoft Registry Editor.

  1. In the Windows Start menu, type regedit.
  2. In the Registry Editor, expand the folder HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.
  3. Scroll down to the 'M'' section in the list, and find the "max_auto_file" folder.
  4. Expand the folder.
    • You should see at least one key called "shell."
    • If you see another called "DefaultIcon" you won't have to create the entry. If this entry does not exist:
  5. Right-Click the "max_auto_file" folder, then choose New > Key.
  6. Name the new key DefaultIcon.
  7. Leave the Registry open.
  8. On the Windows Desktop, right-click the 3ds Max shortcut icon for the installed version.
  9. Choose the "Change Icon" button.
  10. In the Browse field, there will be a location noted for the max.ico icon file.
For example: %SystemRoot%\Installer\{52B37EC7-D836-0410-0864-3C24BCED2010}\max.ico
  1. Copy this file path.
  2. Go back to the Registry.
  3. Click on the "DefaultIcon" key that was created.
  4. In the right window pane, double-click the (Default) key.
  5. In the Value Data field, paste the directory just as it was copied from the shortcut.
  6. Close the registry.
  7. Restart Windows. This should allow 3ds Max to find the correct Icon to associate with this files once Windows restarts.
