Note: When Daylight Saving Time (DST) took effect in Indiana in 2006, most mobile devices had to be updated or patched in order to display the correct time. Because DST began on a different date in 2007, many devices needed to be re-patched at that time. As of 2008, Windows Mobile is the only mobile operating system requiring a software patch. All other devices, provided they were successfully updated the previous year, should not require a software patch. However, if your device was manufactured prior to mid-2007 and has been reset to the factory default, you may need to reinstall the DST patch.

Patches from Microsoft are available for Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 5.0, Smartphone, and Pocket PC editions. Previous versions of Windows Mobile are not supported.

Microsoft approves two options for installing the patch:

  • Download the patch directly to the device and run the included file to update the DST information on the device.
  • Use the Microsoft ActiveSync application to install the patch from a desktop PC.

Note: If a warning appears stating, "This package was designed for a previous version of Windows Mobile, and may not be installed correctly", don't worry. This file was created by Microsoft for Windows Mobile 2003, Windows Mobile 5.0, and Windows Mobile 6 devices and should be compatible with all devices running these versions of Windows Mobile.

Patching Windows Mobile directly from the handheld

Microsoft has provided different links for patching directly from the device, depending on the device's version of Windows Mobile. Pocket PC versions of Windows Mobile typically have a touch screen and stylus. The Windows Mobile Smartphone edition usually does not support a touch screen, and is limited in its features compared to the Pocket PC edition. For information about the version on your Windows Mobile device, check the manufacturer's web site.

If you do not connect to a PC, an update file (CAB) is available to make this update. (You can install a CAB file in a number of ways; a popular method is outlined below.) Also, if you use Microsoft Exchange, contact your system administrator to make sure your Exchange server has been updated as well.

Follow these steps to install the CAB file:

  1. Using the Microsoft Internet Explorer Mobile browser on your device, go to www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/default.mspx.
  2. Under "Using Windows Mobile", select Day Light Saving Time Update.
  3. At the bottom of the page, choose Begin Download Process. Accept the license agreement.
  4. Click the link that corresponds to the version of Windows Mobile you are currently running.
  5. Choose yes when prompted to download the patch. When prompted for a location for installation, choose the device rather than an external storage card.
  6. When the installation is complete you may be prompted to reboot the device.

If you cannot successfully install the patch directly to the device, use the desktop method below.

Installing the patch using a desktop PC

The instructions below refer to both Pocket PC and Smartphone versions:

Note: If your Windows Mobile powered device is using Windows Mobile 2003 or Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, you must follow the instructions above.

  1. Verify that your PC is up to date. For details, see the Microsoft DST 2007 page.

Note: Make sure you update all PCs that you may connect to your Windows Mobile device.

    • For Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003, the update has already been deployed using Automatic Updates and should be installed if you have Automatic Updates enabled. To verify that it is installed, visit Windows Update and make sure all High Priority items are installed.
    • For all products not currently in mainstream support, see Microsoft knowledge base article 914387 for steps on manually updating your PC.

      Search Microsoft Support.

  2. Update your PC by installing the 2007 time zone update for Microsoft Windows operating systems. This will update the time zone definitions on your PC.
  3. If you use Microsoft Outlook to synchronize your calendar, download and run the Outlook Time Zone Update Tool. If you do not use Microsoft Outlook, proceed to step 4.
  4. Check to make sure you have the latest version of ActiveSync, which is ActiveSync 4.5.
  5. Connect your Windows Mobile device to your PC, and then download and run the Daylight Saving Time 2007 Update Tool for Windows Mobile.

Important: After you've installed the update, follow the instructions listed in the Additional Steps Required section of the Microsoft installation page.
