Over the past few years, música urbana — including reggaetón and Latin Trap — has risen in popularity and broken into the US mainstream. While many Latinx artists have contributed to its rise, Bad Bunny is probably one of música urbana’s most recognizable voices, and the immediate success of his debut album, X 100pre, released on Dec. 24, is a testament to the power of this emerging genre.

On one level, X 100pre was a special holiday gift to Bad Bunny’s predominantly Latinx audience; his release came on Noche Buena, the day before Christmas celebrated by many Latinx people. On another level, the album’s immediate success in both Latin and US music markets further shows how Bad Bunny is breaking new ground as an exclusively Spanish-language artist. None of his songs are translated; even Drake sings in Spanish in their collaborative hit single “MIA.” Bad Bunny’s album can be widely enjoyed without needing an English translation.

Mostly known for Latin Trap, Bad Bunny proves his artistic versatility by drawing from different genres including dembow, pop, R&B, Hip Hop, EDM, and even punk rock. His versatility further shines in his collaborations with artists like Drake, Diplo, and El Alfa. Moreover, this mixture of genres shows the full potential of música urbana, a genre rapidly capturing the world’s attention and demonstrating the wide range of Latin American musical styles.

Beyond proving his artistic versatility, Bad Bunny’s new album and its music videos have shown a different and intimate side to the artist. With songs like “Otra Noche en Miami” to “La Romana,” the album ranges from wistful and introspective to self-congratulatory. In “La Romana,” one of the album’s hottest songs, Bad Bunny revels in his own success along with that of Dominican artist El Alfa. On songs like “RLNDT” and “Como Antes,” however, Bad Bunny shows the world he has struggled with his own sense of self and relationships. In his new video for “Si Estuviesemos Juntos” — released on Valentine’s Day — a sad-eyed, heartbroken Bad Bunny reminisces a lost love. In a single song, he combines different moods and messages.

While the first part of “Solo de Mi” is about moving on from an ex and reclaiming one’s self, the song turns on its head when the bass drops and changes the tone of the song suddenly, using dancing and partying as a way of forgetting a past love. This album is filled with empowerment and encouragement for recovering from a break up and for acknowledging one’s own worth.

One of the most important aspects of this album is the overt, political stances Bad Bunny makes. Having received backlash for his eccentric fashion style and the way he paints his nails, Bad Bunny’s music video for “Caro” is both a response to his critics and a celebratory defense of gender nonconformity and fluidity.

Bad Bunny is no stranger to using his platform to speak on issues he is passionate about. In the album, he touches on Puerto Rico’s recovery from Hurricane María, and last year, in his debut performance on American TV on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, he decided to preface his performance of “Estamos Bien” with a direct message to Donald Trump about his administration’s response to the crisis.

Before singing, he declared: “After one year of the hurricane, people are still without electricity in their homes. More than 3,000 people died and Trump’s still in denial […] but you know what? Estamos Bien.”

“Estamos Bien,” which translates to “We’re Good,” is appropriately the penultimate song on the album. It captures his pride for Puerto Rico and offers a conclusion to his own successes and struggles with newfound fame.
